Everything You Need to Know About Working in Kazakhstan

I want to talk about how to get a job in Kazakhstan. I made a blog regarding this topic maybe four or five years ago, and that blog, I think, has the most views on my channel. So, I was thinking maybe it’s time to update that information. A lot of people are trying to come to Kazakhstan for a job, and I understand it's becoming more popular. I would say why? Because Kazakhstan is becoming more European-friendly, western-friendly, and tourist-friendly. So, I think there are more opportunities for people to find information about Kazakhstan and come here to find a job.

For me personally, I work here as a teacher, and there are three main ways to get a job as a teacher in Kazakhstan. So, I will talk about these ways, and then I’ll explain how to get a job in general.

For me personally, I got my first job in Kazakhstan by luck. One of the professors who worked at Nottingham University in the UK had an opportunity to come to a university in Kazakhstan — it was the PASOK British Technical University in Almaty. He came here for a conference, interacted with people, and when he returned, he shared his experience, saying that Kazakhstan is an amazing place, with very few foreigners and a lot of opportunities. This was eight years ago. For example, most of my friends wanted to go to the US, UK, Australia, or Europe. I was the only one who came to Kazakhstan, at least among my friends. So, the first time I applied for the job, I was at the same university my professor had listed.

I had three interviews. The first interview was a general one with the head of the department, the second was with the Dean of the university, and the third was with HR and some teachers from the IT department. After all those interviews, they said that, based on the rules, they couldn’t hire me directly; they would give me a temporary job for one or two months and see how I worked. So, when I went there for the two-month job, I think at that time I had a business visa or something similar, because I wasn’t officially allowed to work. I was providing educational materials, supporting teachers, improving how they taught, and introducing more English into their teaching methodology.

After two months, they offered me a senior lecturer position. That was the easy part. The difficult part was the documents. I had to apply for various documents, and one of them was from India — my bachelor’s degree — and my second document was from the UK — my master’s degree. These had to be apostilled, notarized, and translated, because Kazakhstan uses Russian and Kazakh. All these steps took around two to three months, and it was very expensive. Fortunately, my work reimbursed me for the visa and the last documentation process.

So, the first method to get a job is to apply directly to universities and schools. You can search for the top schools and universities in Kazakhstan, and go through their website. If you’re lucky, there may be an English version of the website, but if not, try to translate it into English and then contact them directly. Applying online rarely works; you need to have a special status. Just emailing directly with your resume and experience can work. Most HR departments at reputed schools and universities will respond, even if you don’t get the job, and they will keep your documents on record and contact you if any vacancies open up.

The first tip is: don’t just apply online. Your application will likely get lost. It’s better to apply directly to the school and then remind them again about the status of your application after a month. There are websites in Kazakhstan that share job vacancies, but they aren’t very popular for foreigners, as there are very few foreigners in Kazakhstan. So again, if you’re working in schools, apply directly to the schools and universities.

The second tip is for people who are working in oil and gas companies. Vacancies are usually shared through job agencies or their main websites. I’ve seen a lot of people coming here who said they saw advertisements in their home countries. For example, they need 20 electricians, 20 engineers, or 5 electricians. It’s almost like buying something from a shop! Always check local newspapers or websites. Companies, especially oil companies, like Chevron, promote their vacancies through online platforms or job agencies. Keep in touch with them.

However, there’s a difference. If you try to email oil companies directly in Kazakhstan, they won’t respond. The interesting thing is that if you have a lot of experience — say, 10 to 15 years of experience in some specialty in oil and gas — then you have a chance to get a job here. But if it’s a general job, Kazakhstan has developed a lot of petroleum and oil and gas engineers, so there is no general job market for those roles here.

The third way to get a job is through companies based in places like Dubai or Abu Dhabi. These companies are building hotels and resorts in Kazakhstan, and many Indians and foreigners come through this route. They get contracts here to create infrastructure, factories, or hotels. Many Indians and people from other developing nations are coming through this route. The visa process is quick, and they come to Kazakhstan.

These are three easy ways to come to Kazakhstan. One thing I want to say, which you may not like, is that eight years ago it was easier to come to Kazakhstan, and the visa process was simple. There were a lot of job opportunities. Now, Kazakhstan is trying to become more self-sufficient. Even if you apply for a job and get accepted, when you apply for the visa, they might reject it saying that you don’t have enough experience or qualifications. Kazakhstan is not like Dubai or the US where you can just go there and look for a job. Kazakhstan is only looking for highly skilled labor with a lot of experience, good qualifications, and education.

That’s it. Hopefully, this blog was useful. I’m always online if you have any questions about jobs or visas. Please make sure to comment below. I’ll read your questions, and if I know the answer, I’ll respond.

As for getting a permanent visa in Kazakhstan, personally, I don’t have a permanent residence here, so I can’t give you a strong, valid answer. But I will be interviewing someone soon. His name is Joe, he’s from the US, and he recently got his permanent resident card here in Kazakhstan. We call it the "pink card" because, in the US, it’s called the "green card," but here it’s pink. So I’ll be interviewing him about his experience, the documents, the process he went through, and the difficulties he faced.

Kazakhstan letter of invitation (LOI), visa rules and E-visa

Here’s a quick update regarding the Kazakhstan visa, as we receive a lot of queries about how to get a visa for Kazakhstan. Look, Kazakhstan is part of a few countries that require an invitation letter for a visa. This means that the visa is normally easy to get if you have the invitation letter. If you don’t have it, then it becomes a bit difficult.

Earlier, Kazakhstan used to issue visas easily, as it’s a beautiful country and slightly developed. Out of all the countries in Central Asia, Kazakhstan is the most developed and beautiful, and it's a bit wealthy too. So, they used to issue visas easily, but then they made it a bit difficult and had stopped issuing them for a while. However, it has reopened now. Our partner agency in Kazakhstan informed us that they can process the invitation letter. It takes about 10-12 days to receive the invitation letter, but once you have it approved by the migration department, getting the visa becomes relatively easier. The chances are more than 90%.

That said, I would like to tell you that the invitation letter for Kazakhstan is a bit expensive. Its cost is above $100. And after that, you have to pay separately for the visa as well. So, in total, the visa process can cost around 50,000 to 60,000 Pakistani rupees, which is a bit expensive. But some people still want to go to Kazakhstan, either for work, to attend a conference, or for some appointment, so they need it.

If you’re also in that group, you can apply. This service is now open, and our visa services include this as well. We can get it done for you in just a day or two.

To get the invitation letter, you need to provide some documents, which include filling out a form where you need to provide your complete information. We will provide you with the form when you order. In addition to that, you need to give a copy of your passport. Also, your travel history is very important. Our Kazakhstan travel agent has mentioned that people often overstay, so they have become stricter. We’ll make sure that only genuine travelers get the invitation letter.

They require a travel history from five or six countries. Even if you have traveled to Dubai, Saudi Arabia, or other places, that’s enough. You will need to provide pictures of the stamps on your passport as proof. After submitting all this, you will get the invitation letter in 10-12 days. But you have to mention in the form the exact date you will arrive and leave Kazakhstan, and most importantly, where you will apply for the visa.

The invitation letter is the first step to get a Kazakhstan visa. After receiving the invitation letter, you need to go to the embassy (MBC) and apply for the visa with the invitation letter, so you can get the visa sticker in your passport. You need to mention in the form the country where you will apply for the visa.

So, if you're in Pakistan, you can apply from Pakistan. If you live in another country like Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, or any European country, you can apply from there as well. If you’re traveling to multiple countries, you can also apply from the country you’re visiting, for example, if you don’t want to apply from Pakistan. Sometimes, the MBC in Pakistan can be a little difficult. You know how the Pakistani staff there tends to be rude and difficult to deal with. So applying from another country is easier and more straightforward. It’s much easier to apply in other countries because they either have foreign staff or original Kazakh staff, and you’ll get your visa.

The MBC has its own fees for the visa. You should make sure to check with them regarding the documents required, because once the invitation letter arrives, you’ll need to know what documents you need for the visa. For example, if they require hotel bookings, flight bookings, etc., you’ll need to provide those as well. These requirements differ for each embassy. Once your invitation letter is ready and you know where you’re applying, we will share the requirements with you as well.

How to register a marriage in Kazakhstan

I want to discuss the different rules, regulations, and documents required for getting married in Kazakhstan. We are sharing our experience, and make sure to follow these rules because, in Kazakhstan, the rules are always being updated and changing. So, these are the rules you need to follow.

In 2019-2020, the most difficult part of getting married in Kazakhstan with a local Kazakh citizen was gathering the documents. There are four main documents that you need. Some of them are easy to get, but some are more complicated.

The first document is your passport, which should be valid for at least six months. The passport should also be translated and notarized.

Second, you need a copy of your work visa or any kind of visa that you hold. For example, once you arrive and live in Kazakhstan, you need to register your address with the government. If you've bought property, you need to register it with the government. You'll also need a document showing the place where you are registered.

The third document is the most difficult one, especially for Indian nationals. It’s the certificate showing that you are not married in Kazakhstan. Typically, in countries like the US or the UK, you can apply for a certificate from government agencies proving you are not married in your home country. However, in India, we do not have the option to obtain such a certificate. When I visited India and went to the registration office asking for a document saying I was not married, they laughed and said they had never heard of such a document. It’s like asking a university to give me a certificate that I don’t have a degree.

So, I returned to Kazakhstan and discussed it with the registration office here. They said that it would be okay if I got a document from the embassy stating that I am not married. So, I went to Almaty, spoke with the consulate, and asked for a non-married certificate. However, they informed me that they stopped issuing these documents to Indian citizens a few years ago.

I went back to the registration office and explained to them, in broken Russian, that for Indians, we don't have such a document saying that we are not married. I mentioned that the consulate stopped issuing these documents, and they said that I could get an affidavit from India. This affidavit should be signed by my parents stating that I am not married. In Kerala, we have a document called "Mudra Patra," where you write that you are not married and your parents also sign, confirming that it's true. You also need to bring a copy of your parents’ passports.

Once you have all these documents, you bring them to the registration office, and everything must be translated. If you have any documents from India, make sure they are apostilled before translating and notarizing them. After submitting the documents, it’s a fairly simple process. The documents will go to a place called "ZAGS," which is the office where marriages and births are registered. You can just go there, submit all the documents, and they will verify if everything is correct. Then, they will give you a form to fill out. The form has two sides, one for the bride and one for the groom, and you need to fill out both sides.

The tricky part is that the document is in Russian, so my wife filled out her side, and I asked her if she could fill out mine too since I couldn’t understand it. The officer told us it wasn’t possible and that I had to fill out the form myself or hire an official translator. I couldn’t bring any of my friends; I had to get an authorized translator with a certification to stand by me and translate.

We were confused sitting there with all the documents, and I couldn’t understand Russian to fill it out properly. My wife then took a pen, filled out the form on my behalf, and I copied what she wrote in my form, letter by letter. It was like a baby learning how to write Russian, but in the end, everything worked out. The officer didn’t say anything, and we submitted the form.

Next, you have to wait for 30 days. Talking about the cost, you have to pay a government fee, which changes all the time. Currently, it's around 2500 tenge, which is less than ten dollars. You’ll receive a piece of paper containing the account number, account name, and government code. You take this paper to the bank, pay the fee, and bring the receipt to the registration office.

After submitting all these documents, you wait for 30 days. At the end of the 30 days, you’ll get an SMS from the government saying that your marriage certificate is ready to be picked up. My wife and I went there, and the whole process took less than five minutes. The officer went through all the documents one final time. Since I’m a foreigner, they called a senior officer to check everything. They paid special attention to the non-marriage certificate and all the documents.

Everything was fine, and they asked us to sign the final documents. Then, they gave us a blue book containing the marriage certificate, and we left the office.
